D&I Executive Presentation to the Boards of John Lewis, Waitrose / D&I Cascade sessions to Regional Areas Managers, Store Managers, HR community / Provision of a D&I “Train the Trainer” Cascade / Package for use in stores and with Partners

Client Brief

John Lewis Partnership is an employee-owned UK company which operates John Lewis department stores, Waitrose supermarkets and some other services.

John Lewis had begun to review their talent pipeline and was keen to develop women and ethnic minorities to senior positions. They were also keen to develop understanding and cross-cultural sensitivity to their increasing diverse partner base and to ensure they were fit for purpose as they began their store expansion plans particularly targeting diverse areas. The initial commission was to design and deliver executive level D&I sessions to the boards of John Lewis and Waitrose. A bespoke session  which presented leading edge thought and practice leadership pertaining to the Retail context  was delivered in an interactive and highly engaging manner. In collaboration with the D&I team and the Head of HR the session was designed to promote and develop leadership insight. The session was customised to the particular context of the company’s criteria. A further commission was awarded leading to a series of keynote speeches sessions to both areas and regional leaders and the HR community.

Global Diversity Practice were in collaboration with the D&I team requested to  develop a bespoke Diversity and inclusion “train the trainer” package which reflected their business needs and could be rolled out across the stores and business areas within the Partnership.

Key Deliverables

GDP developed a bespoke “train the trainer” package. We designed material to fit in with the existing mission, vision and strategies of the company with a focus on being a “great place to work” and reflecting the services and products to map the needs of their diverse customers and John Lewis PBOP Principles. The package consisted of a series of diversity “sound bites” on best practice diversity, behaviours, demographics and legislation. As well as tips and techniques that was related to the retail environment. Additional to this ideas on how to release the spending potential of diverse customers were also included to ensure relevancy of the subject matter.

Impact

Our work served as a catalyst for D&I agenda within John Lewis Partnership and Waitrose . We developed a cascade mechanism that was user friendly and palatable to a diverse audience which ensured the D&I message emanating from the Board was replicated throughout the company.
